The Canadian federal government has announced plans to launch a National Mental Health Strategy in 2025, aimed at addressing the growing mental health crisis across the country. The strategy will include new investments in community-based services, youth programs, and digital mental health tools.

According to Health Canada, one in three Canadians has experienced mental health challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The upcoming strategy is expected to unify federal, provincial, and territorial efforts under a shared framework that prioritizes access, equity, and prevention.

Minister of Health, Mark Holland, said during a press conference: “Mental health is health. This national strategy will ensure every Canadian, regardless of their income or postal code, can access the support they need.”

The strategy will allocate over $4 billion over five years to expand services such as therapy, crisis lines, addiction treatment, and Indigenous-led mental wellness initiatives. Schools and workplaces will also receive funding for mental health training and awareness programs.

Mental health advocates and professionals have welcomed the announcement, but stress that implementation must be swift and inclusive. A detailed roadmap, including timelines and benchmarks, will be released in the fall of 2025.
