In response to growing concerns about the rising cost of living, the Government of Canada has officially announced a significant policy change affecting international students. Starting September 1, 2025, international students will be permitted to work up to 30 hours per week during academic sessions, an increase from the current limit of 20 hours.

The new policy comes after months of consultations with student associations, academic institutions, and provincial governments. Officials believe the change will not only ease financial burdens for students but also help address labor shortages in retail, hospitality, and other service sectors.

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, stated: “International students contribute immensely to our communities and economy. By allowing them to work more hours, we are empowering them to support themselves while continuing their education.”

The government also confirmed that students must remain in good academic standing to benefit from the extended work hours. The policy will be reviewed annually to assess its impact on academic performance and labor market dynamics.

Student groups have welcomed the decision, calling it a "timely and compassionate" move. Universities Canada has also voiced support, citing the positive influence of international students on campuses and communities.
