Leaks from a private chat group on the "Signal" app, which includes several current and former U.S. officials, sparked a wave of controversy after revealing statements described as “mocking and insulting” towards European allies, particularly Germany and France, which left a wide diplomatic fallout in Washington and Western capitals.

The messages revealed in a recent report showed repeated complaints about “the United States having to rescue Europe once again,” according to one participant, referring to rising geopolitical tensions and disparities in military and economic support for Ukraine.

Among the key points that stirred the controversy:

1. Clear disdain for Europe: The messages included explicit phrases expressing weariness with Washington's commitments to the old continent, accusing some European countries of “constant reliance” on U.S. leadership.

2. Criticism directed at Germany and France: Berlin was described as “indecisive,” and Paris as “more concerned with image than substance,” in a negative assessment of the two countries' performance in international crises.

3. Doubts about alliances: Some participants expressed their dissatisfaction with what they described as “European inertia,” believing that traditional alliances need to be reconsidered.

4. Internal confusion within the U.S. establishment: The leaks also reveal disparities in positions among national security officials and diplomats regarding the U.S. global role.

5. Concerns over the leak: Despite the platform's privacy, some members expressed fears of a potential breach, which later materialized.

6. Calls for accountability for those involved: As pressures rose, U.S. lawmakers demanded a formal investigation and punishment for any government official involved in statements that offend allies.

The White House declined to directly comment on the leaks, but emphasized the United States’ commitment to “its strategic relationships based on mutual respect,” in an attempt to contain the fallout.
