The Government of Canada has announced a new immigration pathway aimed at attracting skilled workers in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, technology, and construction. This initiative is part of Canada’s broader strategy to address labor shortages and support economic growth. The new pathway, called the Targeted Occupation Express Entry Stream, will officially open for applications on June 1, 2025.

Under this program, skilled professionals who meet specific occupational criteria and language proficiency requirements will be given priority in the Express Entry system. The government plans to issue up to 50,000 invitations to apply in the first year of the program. Key occupations include nurses, software engineers, electricians, and heavy equipment operators.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated, “We are designing our immigration system to be more responsive to the labor market and to the real needs of our communities. This pathway gives skilled workers a more direct route to permanent residency.”

The announcement has been well-received by industry leaders and provincial governments, many of whom have been urging the federal government to take concrete action. The program will also include supports for faster credential recognition and settlement services to help newcomers integrate successfully into Canadian society.

The government will release more details about the selection process, application timelines, and eligible professions later this month.
