Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the Province of Ontario will stop selling American alcoholic products in the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) stores, in a symbolic move protesting the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian auto imports.
Ford said during a press conference held today at Queen's Park:
“The only acceptable thing is zero tariffs. If they are going to hit our industry, we will not sell their products here.”
He confirmed that the decision takes effect immediately, adding that he supports imposing retaliatory tariffs on the American auto sector in support of Canadian workers.
The decision includes withdrawing American alcoholic beverages from over 600 LCBO stores spread across the province, which will have a limited economic impact but carries a clear political message.
Ford's remarks come in response to the escalating reactions to the Trump administration's decision to impose a 25% tariff on car imports from Canada and other countries. The decision has raised widespread concerns about the future of bilateral trade relations and the impact of the tariffs on the Canadian industry and supply chains.
The automotive sector is one of the most important pillars of Ontario's economy, providing tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and relying heavily on the U.S. market.
