Canadians are looking to Prime Minister Mark Carney tomorrow, Sunday, to announce the date of the federal elections, which are expected to be held on April 28 or May 5. This comes amid rising tensions with Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian products.
Carney and his competitor, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, are trying to win the voters' trust by presenting a strong economic vision capable of protecting Canada from American threats. Reports indicate that major economic challenges include over-reliance on the U.S. market, stagnant productivity, weak domestic investment, as well as internal trade barriers between provinces.
Carney, who took over the leadership of the Liberal Party from Justin Trudeau just eight days ago, confirmed that his government would work to remove internal trade barriers and accelerate approvals for energy projects to boost economic growth. Carney said: “We need to make bold and swift decisions to tackle unprecedented challenges.”
Although the Conservatives were leading the Liberals by a margin of 20 points at the beginning of the year, the latest polls indicate that the gap has narrowed in favor of Carney, reflecting a shift in the Canadian political mood in the face of the economic crisis.
