Ottawa – Arab Canada News
Canadian Liberal Party leader Mark Carney has said that the traditional relationship between Canada and the United States has "ended," amid rising trade tensions and President Donald Trump's imposition of new tariffs on car imports, leading to market disruptions and widespread concern in industrial and political circles.
Carney affirmed in statements made today that he is preparing to have a direct conversation with President Trump, with the aim of discussing the implications of the recent U.S. decision and trying to defuse the trade crisis that threatens thousands of Canadian jobs and supply chains between the two countries.
Carney said:
“What we see today confirms that the old relationship based on mutual trust and trade respect between our countries has ended. We are entering a new phase that requires clarity and strength in defending Canada's interests.”
Political and Trade Escalation
Carney's statements come amid rising tensions between Ottawa and Washington following the Trump administration's imposition of a 25% tariff on car imports not made in the United States, a move that the Canadian government described as “unjustified and directly targeting the Canadian economy.”
Liberal Plan to Face Escalation
Carney had previously announced an extensive economic plan to protect the Canadian automotive sector, which includes investments in local manufacturing, building a national supply network, and establishing a strategic response fund worth $2 billion, affirming that his party "will not remain idle in the face of a U.S. policy that harms Canadian workers."
The Electoral Scene is Affected
This crisis is expected to cast a shadow over the ongoing electoral campaigns, as trade and economic sovereignty issues have become a key focus in the parties' discourse, amid calls for adopting stricter positions in dealing with Washington.
