Washington – Arab Canada News
A recent economic analysis has shown that American cities located in states won by President Donald Trump in the last elections will suffer the most from potential retaliatory tariffs that Canada may impose in response to the 25% car tariff recently announced by Washington.
According to a report published by CTV News, the potential Canadian tariffs will target vital sectors such as agriculture, aluminum, manufacturing, and auto parts, which heavily rely on exports to the Canadian market.
Trump's States in the Crosshairs of the Canadian Response
The major affected cities are located in states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin – areas considered key electoral bases for Trump, hosting thousands of jobs linked to the Canadian-U.S. supply chains, especially in automobiles and raw materials.
Experts say these results place the U.S. administration in a complex political paradox, as the tariff escalation led by Washington may negatively impact electoral districts considered crucial for Trump.
Canada is Exploring Its Strategic Options
For its part, the Canadian government has not yet announced details of the tariff response package, but repeated statements from officials in Ottawa confirmed that the response will be "calculated and targeted," taking into account the political and economic impact within the United States.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated this week that he supports imposing "tariffs for tariffs," emphasizing that Canada cannot stand idly by while its national industry is harmed.
Cross-Border Trade… A Hostage to Politics
Analysts warn that continued escalation between the two sides could lead to disruptions in the bilateral economic relations between Canada and the United States, at a time when markets are recovering from the effects of inflation and disrupted supply chains.
