The city of Toronto and its surroundings are preparing for a complex winter storm this weekend, which includes freezing rain and ice pellets, prompting meteorologists to describe the expected conditions as "chaotic and dangerous," with warnings about potential impacts on traffic and flights.

According to Environment Canada, the weather disturbances will begin Friday evening and extend until Sunday, with a progression in weather conditions from light rain to freezing rain and then heavy ice accumulation in some areas, especially in the eastern and southern parts of Ontario.

Expected impacts on daily life

The weather conditions may lead to the formation of ice layers on roads and power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and power outages. Flight delays are also expected for arrivals and departures at Pearson International Airport, particularly on Saturday morning.

Meteorologist Jennifer Pag from CP24 said:

"We are dealing with a complex multi-phase weather system, where precipitation begins as liquid and then quickly freezes on cold surfaces, making driving and walking hazardous."

Official warnings and preparations

Local authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm's peak and ensure that homes are stocked with supplies and essentials. They also advised removing snow from roofs and drainage systems in anticipation of ice accumulation.

While temperatures may temporarily stabilize near the freezing point, the sharp drop expected on Saturday night could exacerbate the risk of slips, especially in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A message to residents

Weather experts advise Toronto residents to stay updated on weather conditions continuously, postpone any unnecessary travel, and prepare for a "chaotic and freezing" weekend.
