Ottawa – Arab Canada News

The leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, Mark Carney, announced a temporary suspension of his election campaign and a return to the capital, Ottawa, amid rising concerns about impending U.S. tariffs that could impact vital sectors of the Canadian economy, including the automotive, pharmaceutical, and energy industries.

Carney's campaign stated in a press release on Tuesday morning that “the current phase requires responsible leadership and direct presence to confront the challenges threatening the interests of Canadians,” noting that the party leader will hold emergency meetings with senior government officials to address the developments.

Focus on protecting the economy

Carney confirmed in a brief statement that he “will not allow Canada to be used as a negotiating chip,” emphasizing that a Liberal government, if elected, will take decisive steps to protect Canadian workers and national supply chains.

He added:

“This is not a political moment, but a national moment. We must face the challenge together as Canadians.”

Sensitive timing

This move comes at a sensitive time in the election campaign, as U.S. President Donald Trump is looking to expand tariffs on Canadian exports as part of an aggressive trade policy known as “America First,” which may include imports of pharmaceuticals, cars, and steel.

Despite the suspension of the campaign on the ground, sources within the Liberal Party confirmed that Carney “remains engaged in political discussions and will continue to interact with Canadians through press conferences and official statements.”
