Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of the Green Riyadh Metro Project, a major initiative under Vision 2030 aimed at transforming the capital’s public transport system while addressing environmental concerns. The project, which includes the construction of over 176 kilometers of eco-friendly metro lines, is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and promote sustainable urban development.
The Riyadh Metro will be powered by renewable energy sources and incorporate smart technology for energy efficiency, passenger comfort, and operational safety. Officials say it will serve more than 3 million passengers daily by 2030.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy, stated: “This project is a step toward a cleaner, greener future. It supports our national targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing quality of life in urban areas.”
In addition to its environmental impact, the project is also expected to generate thousands of local jobs and attract foreign investment in Saudi Arabia’s growing green economy. The Green Riyadh Metro is part of the broader “Green Middle East” initiative announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021.
Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with full operations expected by the end of 2030.
