Gaza – Arab Canada News
In recent hours, intensive regional and international movements have been taking place aimed at reaching a temporary ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, coinciding with the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, amid escalating international pressure to stop the fighting and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
Egypt and Qatar are leading the mediation efforts, with an Egyptian security delegation discussing a ceasefire proposal with leaders from the Hamas movement during meetings in Doha, while Cairo continues its communications with the Israeli side and the United States to bring the viewpoints closer together.
Proposals on the table
According to informed sources, the Egyptian proposal includes a temporary ceasefire for 50 days, which involves the release of five living Israeli hostages in exchange for opening the crossings and allowing aid in, with the launch of indirect negotiations under international sponsorship to transition to a comprehensive agreement.
For its part, the Hamas movement expressed its readiness to positively engage with the proposed initiatives, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring the cessation of aggression and lifting the siege, and rejecting any attempts by Israel to procrastinate or buy time.
Diverse Israeli positions
In contrast, the Israeli government is studying the submitted proposals, amidst internal division between those who support reaching a temporary truce for humanitarian reasons, and those who reject any agreement without achieving strategic gains, primarily the release of all hostages and disarming Hamas.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant recently stated that “any ceasefire that does not include security guarantees for Israel will be a lost opportunity.”
Supportive international stance
For its part, the United States has continued its efforts to establish the ceasefire, with reports revealing a new American proposal that includes a deal for the release of an American hostage in exchange for an announcement from President Donald Trump calling for a ceasefire and the resumption of the negotiation process.
The United Nations also called for taking advantage of the occasion of Eid al-Fitr as a humanitarian opportunity for a ceasefire, warning of a worsening humanitarian disaster if military operations continue.
Conclusion
Although the ceasefire has not been officially approved yet, regional and diplomatic indicators suggest relative progress in the negotiations, with widespread anticipation in political and humanitarian circles for a possible announcement in the coming days, restoring hope for stopping the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip during the days of Eid.
